March of Dimes: March for Babies

On what was expected to be a rainy Saturday, the sun peeked out long enough for Rowan County’s March of Dimes/March for Babies on September 19th to be held on the track of Catawba College. Not only did Catawba College provide the venue for this March, but many students, faculty and staff gave their time and money to make this event a great success.

While a portion of the money was raised behind the scenes, we had a wonderful turn-out for the March.  Dr. and Mrs. Craig Turner were there to lead off the initial lap.  The young women of The Delphinian Society were awesome in their matching purple Delphi t-shirts and one of the largest teams on the track was the Natural and Behavioral Sciences team, which included our own Dr. Lyn Boulter.  We walked, jogged, ran or danced 14 laps to the music of the dee-jay March For Babies provided. There were activities for young children including bubbles and a bounce house.  One of outside teams, the Optimism Club, provided us wonderful grilled hot dogs.  Of course, we can’t forget the Krispy Kreme donuts.

The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.  “March” is actually M-A-R-C-H, which stands for Mothers, Advocacy, Research, Community Grants and Healthy Baby Education.  This is a wonderful community cause that we are all hoping to participate in again next year – maybe we’ll have to put out a little challenge to Livingstone College to see if they can raise as much as we can.

It’s not too late to donate, either!  You can do so online at www.marchforbabies.org or by check or cash on campus.  If you wish to donate on-campus, please contact Beverly Maurice at bmaurice@catawba.edu or (336) 655-5035.  Catawba’s final date for excepting donations is October 19th, but you can donate anytime of the year by going online.
