“I believe…that we are our brother’s keeper.”—Professor Julia Hayes
On February 17th, 2010, students and faculty alike came together during a Vocation and Values Dinner brought together by the Lilly Center. Before gathering for the buffet dinner, five speakers spoke about their personal values and vocations and how the Catawba Community has helped them realize those goals.
Speakers included Tommy and Timmy Readling, senior Business Administration majors, Susan Fisher, a junior Spanish and Sociology major, Ms. Julia Hayes, Professor of English, and Dr. Steve McKinzie, Director of Library Services.
The speakers spoke and gave different stories about their own individual aspirations and experiences that they have obtained here and Catawba. Susan Fisher told of how she’s always had a passion for Spanish and helping people. This led her to become a Spanish and Sociology major. Ms. Hayes drew influence from one of her favorite short stories, “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin. She also told of an assignment she gave one class where they started a paper with the phase “I believe…” and she said her own answer was the theme of “Sonny’s Blues”; that we are our brother’s keepers.
The dinner portion of the evening was spent with intermingling of everyone with conversations ranging from personal ambitions and experiences to reflections of what the speakers talked about.
It is clear that one of Catawba’s main views is helping each person’s goals become a reality and the Vocations and Values dinner was a successful way of people sharing their experiences and stories.
