Many of us enjoy going to the circus. We like the clowns, the trapeze artists, and the elephants. This is the kind of circus we are used to. On March 26, Wigwam Productions introduced Catawba to a completely different type of circus.

His name is Michael Dubois and his act is called Solo Circus. He is a magician, comedian, and a juggler all rolled into one. When he took off his shirt while bouncing a ball on his head in his opening act, the students could tell they were in for a treat. His next act was to demonstrate his juggling skills, juggling 3, 5, and then an amazing 7 balls at a time. Steffi Cook was able to experience his juggling skills first hand because Dubois chose her to be his juggling assistant. With Steffi’s help, Dubois proceeded to perform some amazing juggling tricks, all the while keeping the audience laughing with his jokes.

However, juggling what not Dubois only talent. In a “gross out” type trick that had some of the audience members squealing, Dubois stuck a balloon up his nose and made part of it come out of his mouth. Needless to say, Steffi refused the balloon when Dubois offered it to her as a souvenir.

His most nerve racking trick, involved a straight jacket and a giant unicycle, also called a giraffe. Dubois had two students assist him in getting on the unicycle and then had another student tie him into the straight jacket. He then had the students let go of him, leaving him all alone to escape. For a few heart pounding seconds, Dubois hovered over the audience, while the music played, trying his best to escape. Finally, with a sigh of relief from the crowd, he managed to take the straight jacket off.

From the top of his giant unicycle, he announced to the crowd that he was about to perform his final trick. Dubois asked Brandon Coble to come on stage and assist him by handing him the knives he was about to juggle. When Brandon was safely off stage, and after several students had moved out of the front row from fear, he began to juggle. The seconds ticked by slowly, but Dubois impressively juggled all three of the knives while riding the unicycle, without so much as a cut.

Michael Dubois put on a fabulous show for the Catawba students. Everyone who attended the show had a fabulous time and Dubois even stayed after to perform some more tricks for the students.
