On Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Catawba College’s home basketball game, the Senior Class representatives of the Student Government Organization hosted Cheer for the Cure, a fundraiser benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The Senior Class SGA is represented by Kendrick Mayes, President; Zane Gibson, Vice President; Zandi Watts, Secretary; Andrew Tamer, Treasurer. SGA paired with Catawba’s’ Women’s basketball team for an effort called “Think Pink,” in an attempt to raise Breast Cancer Awareness, provide proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer fund, and celebrate the strength of Breast Cancer survivors.
The event included specially designed t-shirts, 50-50 Raffle Tickets, free Chik-fil-a Sandwiches, and half time court competitions for the chance to win free gift cards. During half-time, Senior Class SGA looked for the loudest, most enthused fans for a chance to win free “Cheer for the Cure” t-shirts.
Senior Class SGA President Kendrick Mayes expressed SGA’s vision for the event: “The goal tonight is to get Catawba students to support the men and women’s basketball teams, all while supporting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and raising Breast Cancer Awareness.”
Zandi Watts, Secretary, designed the t-shirt for the event, featuring black and pink font with a Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon. 30% of proceeds from t-shirt sales and 50% of proceeds from Raffle Ticket Sales were given directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. By the end of the night, all t-shirts were sold. In all, Cheer for the Cure raised $226.00 in proceeds.
Mayes recounts the night’s success, all while giving gratitude to those who made it possible: “The Senior Class SGA members would like to thank everyone that purchased a T-shirt and those that came out tonight to support both teams and this important cause. We greatly appreciate the support and enthusiasm.”
