The 2013 spring semester will be extremely busy with environmental awareness events and competitions supported by the college’s ECO, GEO, and Sustainable Catawba communities.
Catawba College will be participating in the Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN) for a three week period during the semester. 185 different schools, including Catawba, Elon, UNC Chapel Hill, and Appalachian State will be competing. For three weeks, the campus’ water and energy usage will be measured. The school among the 185 competing campuses using the least amount of energy will be declared the “most energy efficient school nationwide.” The time for this competition will be announced in the next few weeks. Be sure to turn off your lights and conserve water as much as possible!
Another national competition, RecycleMania, will also take place this semester. This will be Catawba’s 6th year competing. The facilities department will measure the amount of recycled materials collected during the entire spring semester. Numerous fun recycling events will be held throughout the semester to support Catawba in this competition.
ECO will be hosting Earth Week April 8th-12th. Plan to come out to the preserve for the traditional Easter egg hunt, recycled fort bonanza event, and special movie screening. More events to be announced.
GEO will be hosting a special herpetology event on April 13th. The Catawba community and surrounding community are invited to stop by and learn more about reptiles and amphibians. GEO plans to arrange a guest speaker appearance. The guest speaker will bring some animals for participants to see. Also, the club hopes to catch reptile and amphibian specimens from Catawba’s nature preserve to show participants and educate them about their importance in our environment.
As always, ECO will hold numerous meetings throughout the semester for club members and any other students interested in learning more about environmental awareness issues facing our community and campus. The next meeting will be January 22nd at 11AM in Adam’s Loft. Sustainable Catawba will also hold luncheon meetings for anyone interested in attending as well. All students are welcome to attend meetings and learn more.
Keep checking your Catawba e-mail for updates concerning these events. New events and dates will be released as soon as they are available. If you have questions concerning any of the environmental activities, clubs, or programs, please contact Kyra Thurow (email@example.com) or Sarah Wike (firstname.lastname@example.org).
