Interview By: Angela Hope

What do you like best about Catawba Softball and Catawba athletics in general?

“I like that Catawba Softball keeps me in shape all year around.  We may be a spring sport, but we constantly lift and condition all year.  Softball helps me keep my grades in check and on top of things.  Athletics is just something that has always come naturally to me, it’s easy!  With Catawba athletics being Division II, it helped me financially to find a school that worked for me.  I think the best thing about Catawba athletics is that everyone knows each other and that most of the other sports are very social with one another and that they are supportive of each other.”
What made you decide to be a student athlete?

“Being a student athlete is what I’ve always been known as so it wasn’t really my choice to make. In high school, I was a 3 sport athlete who lettered 12 times, so being a student athlete is just something that came naturally to me.  Yes, student comes first, so that has me staying on top of my grades.  Even through high school, I had to stay on top of them.  With that said, I managed to stay on the academic honor roll, as well as, the athletic honor roll all through high school.  Coming to college, I made sure that I kept that mentality because without good grades, I would not be able to participate in my sport.”

What are you planning on doing after Catawba?

“I’m pursuing a major in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration. My plans after Catawba are to find a job back in Maryland, which is home for me, and stay content with it until I can find an opening in my dream occupation.  I would love to be a sports agent or national recruiter.  Having little experience in that kind of work though, is something that will set me back. I have been putting applications everywhere I can possibly think of that could help me further my career in those occupations. Hopefully everything will pan out the way I want it to.”

What is a typical day in the life of a softball player like?

” A typical day in the life of a softball player is very hectic! On a practice day, we would have classes and then practice at 2:30 until probably around 5:30 or so.  Now when there is lifting involved, we would lift at 6:15 in the morning, go to class, and then go to practice.  On game days, we would go to class and then get mentally prepared by arriving at the field an hour and fifteen minutes before game time to hit, stretch, and throw.  That is typically our schedule during the spring.  During the fall, our schedule is we lift three times a week at 6:15 am, condition twice a week at 5 pm, and have individuals twice a week at different times, depending on your class schedule.  Practice would be included only during the two months of fall season that we play tournaments.”
How do you manage to balance both school and practice, and anything else your involved in?

“How I balance everything is really simple…TIME MANAGEMENT! It is so vital to my life that I can’t help but be on a constant schedule.”
What advice do you have for future Catawba Athletes or just Catawba Students in general?

“The best advice I can give to any future Catawba Athletes is to be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before in your specified sport.  You may not like your sport anymore, but you couldn’t imagine your life without it! So work hard, play hard!  Look good, feel good, play good!  To Catawba Students–Stay on campus! It is the best way to get to know your future roommates, teammates, or even friends.  Trust me, you’ll love it!”
What’s your best memory from your years with Catawba Softball?

“I would like to say that the best memory hasn’t happened yet because our season is still underway, but also, there are so many memories that have happened since I started here as a freshman that all of them are so great and just a good time that I would never forget them.  But if I had to pick something, it would probably be the bonds that I have created and had with all of my teammates, good or bad, old or new.  I love my softball family and nothing would change that!  Here’s to the best that has yet to come…”
What’s the worst game you ever had? Why?

” Umm…that’s a toughy! I honestly don’t remember the worst game I have ever had because the best thing, as a softball player, is having a short term memory because if you dwell on the last mistake you made, then you won’t play up to your full potential and capabilities.”
What do you think Catawba Athletics’ does best in helping student athletes?

“I think the best thing that Catawba athletics’ does is that it is able to give money to every team in order to offer future athletes scholarships to come play for them.  Also, that they are so supportive!”
