So, you work all week until Friday, the lovely day that you can go to sleep that evening and know that there is no pressure to wake up the next morning, and then Saturday is similar, other than those who go to church on Sunday and the like, but then this strange occurance happens on Sunday evening…. the realization sets in:
Tomorrow is Monday.
(insert creepy slasher sound bit, like from Psycho)Yes Monday. That day of the week that takes us lowly people away from the rest and relaxation of the weekend and thrusted – nay hurled, into the work week full force. The day that the alarm clock seems most aggravating and makes even the most even tempered of people want to throw it across the room.
But let’s look at a few facts about this most cherished day.
- English: Monday
- Portuguese: Segunda-Feira
- Meaning of Portuguese Word: “Second Fair”
- French: Lundi
- Russian: ponedelnik
- Meaning of Russian Name: “after do-nothing”
- Planet: Moon
*The international ISO 8601 standard has Monday as the first day of the week (which is what is widely used on calendars), however according to traditional Christian count, Sunday is the first day of the week.
So to sum up, Monday is named after the Earth’s Moon (and if you added one more ‘o’ in Monday it could become ‘Moonday’… but that’s probably coincidental). It’s not technically the first day of the week… though most consider it as such. And, if you were Russian, it’s the day after doing nothing… wierd.
Here are a few quotes about Mondays:
- “On Monday mornings I am dedicated to the proposition that all men are created jerks.” –H. Allen Smith quotes (American Writer, 1906-1976)
- “Sometimes it pays to stay in bed in Monday, rather than spending the rest of the week debugging Monday’s code” — Dan Salomon quotes
- “MONDAY, n. In Christian countries, the day after the baseball game.” –Ambrose Bierce quotes (American Writer, Journalist and Editor, 1842-1914)
So, we’re not the only ones who have a special place for Mondays in our hearts… it’s a common trait that people have had ever since there was a Monday or a work week.
Not to mention, Mondays are terrible days for Garfield the Cat…
