Staying Fit On The Go

Many people work hard before vacation to get that great beach bod.  The hard part is keeping that beach body throughout the vacation!

Even if you don’t have access to a gym and are nowhere near a place to run, there are still ways you can keep in shape.

FOR ARMS/SHOULDERS: The Water Bottle Weight

Full water bottles can serve as great weights for your arms.  If you refer to my past article, “Tone Up, Girls!” you will find detailed arm workouts you can use with a water bottle weight.  Try arm raises to the front, to the side, and to the side with your thumbs facing outwards.

FOR LEGS/BUTT: The Step Up

A few of my favorite toning tricks involve the use of just a chair.  To tone your butt and legs, stand facing a chair or a surface of comparable height.  Step up onto the chair.  While balanced on the chair bottom, kick the opposite leg up, then return to the floor.  Do this step up move for about 10 reps and switch legs.

**Tip: to make it harder, hold a weight.  Use a water bottle, a book, or anything else you can find.

FOR ABS: The Stability Ball Crunch

Crunches can be done anywhere without any equipment.  However, I’ve found that the most effective abdominal-strengthening can be done with the Bender Ball.  This handy little tool is an inflatable exercise ball that can be put under one’s tailbone or lower back to create an ab exercise that is “408% more effective than regular crunches.”  It creates extension back and flexion forward, which works your muscles more effectively than normal crunches.  I HIGHLY recommend the Bender Ball!

FOR ARMS: Tricep Dips

Tricep dips are an easy arm toning exercise which can be done anywhere, since all you need is a piece of furniture for leverage.  To do this, sit in a chair with your heels on the ground and toes upward. Ease yourself off the chair, only holding on with your palms. Lower yourself into a dip, then come back up.  That’s one rep.  Lift one leg to make the exercise a little more challenging.

**Tip: you can also tone your triceps by tweaking your typical push-up.  Just move your hands inward with your thumbs almost touching, and be sure your elbows are going back and not outward.

FOR CARDIO: The Workout DVD

Fitnessmagazine.com has ranked the top 10 workout DVDs here.  Try one of these out.  Whether you follow a cardio workout, a fun dance DVD, or relax and tone with some yoga, workout DVDs can be a great way to get a quick workout in when you have limited resources.

SO, if you decide to partake in some exercising on the go, now you have a few new trips up your sleeve!
