Everyone who has run a mile knows how awful that side stitch can be while you’re trying to get your run on. Here, I’ve broken down what causes it, how to get rid of it, and how to avoid it!

Preventing the runner’s crap pre-run:

  • Drink lots of water beforehand and during, if possible.  Dehydration is the main cause for most cramps.
  • Stretch to avoid tight, cramping muscles
  • Eat light before your run.  Avoid protein, since it is harder for your body to digest.  Carbs are great for pre-running fuel.

Getting rid the runner’s cramp during the run:

  • Stop running for a second, if possible.  If not, do the following while you jog:  put pressure with your thumb on the right side of your belly.  Breathe evenly as you continue to apply pressure and push your liver downwards.  This can relieve any pressure from gas you may have.
  • Bend over and tighten your abs while continuing to breathe evenly
  • Breathe through pursed lips.  Breathe in for four counts through your nose, then breathe out for two counts through your mouth.  If this doesn’t work, try adjusting your breathing a different way.

Usually, when I apply pressure to my cramp and adjust my breathing, I can quickly get rid of my cramp.  I have also found that eating right before a run really reduces the chance of cramps.
