The following letters were submitted to the editor of The Pioneer.
Read on for letters about campus driving hazards, opening convocation, and a request for a new Health & Fitness column.

Dear Aly,

Health and fitness are two very important topics in today’s society.  There are many different views of what being healthy is or what being fit involves.  Nutrition also plays an important role in how healthy a person is and how well their body performs.  With so many young folks and athletes around campus, I believe there should be a health and fitness section in The Pioneer campus newspaper.

This section can involve different workout tips, nutrition ideas, and news from the on-campus workout facility.  Students that practice good health and fitness habits can be featured and give tips to teach others about the subject.  When students see their peers practicing healthy habits, they may be more likely to practice these habits for themselves.  Also, when students hear success stories from others who have chosen a healthier way of life, then they may choose to follow that lead.

A Health and Fitness section in The Pioneer will open many eyes to the increasing importance of nutrition and exercise on the college campus.  With the decline of sources of news in the economy today, this section of The Pioneer will be very helpful.  Students can be easily exposed to great tips while reading your exciting tribute of news through The Pioneer.

Sincerely yours,

Bethany Davidson

Bethany, your wish is our command!  We have now added a Health and Fitness Column.  Enjoy!

Dear Aly,

The shrubbery lining the lower lot of the Robertson College-Community Center is hazardous to the students that park there.  When exiting this area, I stop to check traffic only to realize that I cannot see either way clearly because of the overgrown and horribly placed shrubs.  Because of the blocked views, I have inched my vehicle out only to miss a car accident by inches with someone coming over the hill from the parking area behind the theater.  In sharing my close calls with other students, I found that they too have experienced this risk area just as I have.

The landscaping in this area needs to be redesigned.  Most of the shrubs, while overgrown, are on the verge of death.  They either need to be trimmed shorter or removed.  Small green plants and colorful flowers would give the area a fresh look and provide drivers with the clear view they need to leave the parking lot safely.  Something needs to be done before someone gets hurt.

Sincerely yours,

Melanie L. Mishue

Dear Aly,

I would like to congratulate the college for a great opening convocation.  The speeches from Dr. Turner, Dr. Stephens, Mr. Fisher, and Kevin Flebbe were the perfect way to open the semester.  The introduction of the green pig, in particular, was a good way to begin the year; it shows that the college is focused on protecting the environment and cares about the community.  The highlight of the event, though, was definitely the two songs performed by the choir, especially “Show Me Thy Way.”  It was such an inspiring performance; you could feel that the whole chapel, and everyone in it, was uplifted.

It was also nice to see some of the professors and staff honored for their service to the college, in particular, Dr. Sinnot, who has been at the college for 40 years.  To help frame Dr. Sinnot’s impact, my wife’s 57 year old aunt had her as a professor during her undergraduate study at Catawba, and, today, still talks about how Dr. Sinnot was her favorite professor.  Then, last semester, my wife was in her Shakespeare class and loved it; she said Dr. Sinnot had such passion for the course, which made it impossible not to be enthusiastic about the class.  Having such an impact on so many lives, for such a long time, is simply amazing.

I also wanted to congratulate all of the students for coming to the event in such large numbers.  I was serving at the convocation as a Junior Marshal, and we had been told that ensuring everyone had a seat shouldn’t be a problem as there is normally not a big crowd.  Yet there was hardly an empty seat in the chapel, not just in the main downstairs area, but also upstairs and in the transepts.  The level of community and participation at Catawba is something we should all be proud of.  Let’s make sure we keep it up for the rest of the year and make the 2009-2010 school year one of the best.

Sincerely Yours,

Robert Sawyer
