Catawba Indians?

“Hut, hut, hike”, yells the quarterback. The center snaps the ball. The quaterback takes the ball from the center’s hands just as the center releases it; all done in an effortless motion. The quarterback shuffles backwards in a rehearsed movement. His eyes dart ’round, scanning the field for an open receiver. He identifies his target, tightens his grip on the oval shaped pigskin, draws back his arm and then at the last second thrusts his arm forward releasing the ball just as the defensive line breaks through.
The prospective receiver is only inches from his pursuer. He glances back to gage the distance between himself and the defender. His peripheral vision spots the football. He re-adjusts his charted course to meet the ball in the end zone. “Touchdown!”, cries the game announcer. The spectators rejoice in thunderous applause whilst being provoked by a silly costumed man.
Sound familiar? For the Catawba football fan all except the last three words should resemble an excerpt of a typical football game. To be frank we, the Catawba student body, have a lame duck mascot and it saddens me to think of all the avid fans treking out to the football stadium to find no rebel rousing leader of a mascot to pump pump pump you up.
Without a physical representation for the our beloved school how will the oh so loyal fans know when to yell “GO. FIGHT. WIN.”? Should we leave such important game time rituals like chanting or provoking the other team to the cheerleaders?! I think not! Sure the Crazies are there but they can’t beat the lovable throwback game goer of “The Mascot”.
We need an avatar on the field to represent our school. One who will throw down with a rival representation of a nefarious adversary. So, I propose that we the current student body shed the traditions of our forebearers and start a new tradition. If the problem that we face is a legal one or a problem of obtaining permission to portray a specific person or persons then problem solved. I offer my image free of charge to be used in any representation the college wishes. My only stipulation is that a foam suit be made in my image to be worn during school events and/or functions.
