Dear Brandon:
I am a sophomore and a first year Resident Assistant here at Catawba College. Last year I decided to apply for a spot as an RA. The main reason I became an RA was that it gave me an opportunity to be part of a team. Throughout my years in high school, I stayed busy with sports and clubs. However, as a freshman in college, I realized that my sports career had ended. Then about half way through the year, I read an advertisement for RA applications. Needless to say, applying to become an RA was something I will never regret.
One week before students arrived on campus I moved into my room and prepared for a week of RA training. I went into training thinking it was going to be just an overview of the job. However, I quickly realized that was just one of the many characteristics of the training process. As the week went along, I became aware of the team that we were building. The previous year I recognized how important it was for me to be a part of a team. I may not be on a sports team, but the values and qualities of an RA are that of a team. I would like to encourage others like myself who enjoy a team aspect to become an RA.
Sincerely yours,
Garrett McAuliffe
