The weather was perfect for the annual Autumn Jubilee at Dan Nicholas Park on October 3rd and 4th. The sun was shining and thousands of people from all over the state flocked once again to this fun-filled festival to celebrate the coming of fall. Even at 9:30 in the morning, the aroma of great food and the breeze of a coming autumn filled the entire park.

The festival began at 10:00 a.m. and numerous food vendors filled the parking lot including Bojangles, Brian’s Grill, Mike and Deb’s Old-Fashioned Homemade Icecream, Greek Specialty Foods, and many more. The numerous options included teriyaki meat-on-a-stick, homemade dumplings, tacos, burgers, kettle corn, funnel cakes, and even chocolate-dipped cheesecake.

The park’s normal attractions were open along with extra activities such as a hayride, a rock climbing wall, an inflatable slide, pumpkin-painting, live concerts, and even a few magic shows. Needless to say, it was a blast for all families, kids and adults alike.

All the participants were set up and ready very early Saturday morning to display their art, handiwork, and delicious goodies. The variety of items for sale was impressive. There was everything from quilts, jewelry, and woodwork to homemade mints, fudge, and apple butter.

One booth offered 20 or more different flavors of fudge such as blueberry IMG_1851cheesecake, dreamsicle, chocolate-covered cherry, snickers, etc. These are definitely an example of the hard work that goes into this festival. Another displayed numerous scented “soy” candles which burn slower and longer than paraffin candles. These soy candles are also safer, because they do not burn hot and the wax as a liquid can actually be used as a moisterizing lotion.

Ed and Sharon Bartlett came from Mocksville to display their hobby of 10 years, “Wood-n-Things”, which includes wooden toys, games, rocking horses, and covered-wagon lamps. Ed stated that their hobby was a great way way to get rid of all the many frustrations that go along with working in the office every day. He and his wife travel all over the East coast displaying their work at festivals and community events similar to the Autumn Jubilee. They even had the opportunity to go to the Apple Festival in Wilkesboro this same weekend. However, the Bartletts decided to attend the Autumn Jubilee because, according to Sharon, “it was the most profitable show last year.”

Ed and Sharon Bartlett are just one example of how people from all over the community and all over the state come together to make this festival possible and successful. After 30 years, the Autumn Jubilee was able to experience yet another great community turnout to usher in the season.
