If you’re looking for a way to spend a sunny weekend day, look no further than Bringle Ferry Rd. in Rowan County. Dan Nicholas Park offers lots of fun and cheap ways to spend time outdoors.

Who doesn’t love miniature golf? The courses at Dan Nicholas are standard miniature golf courses, complete with the classic windmill. These courses are fun and easy, so even the most terrible players will have a good time. The only downfall? The courses aren’t very shaded. Be sure to keep something cool to drink with you on hot days. You can play one 18-hole course for $2 or both courses for $3.

Dan Nicholas offers beautiful walking trails around Lake Murtis and through the park’s wooded areas. My personal favorite is an approximately two-mile hiking trail that loops through the woods. The wooded trails are shady and cool when it gets hot, and the sunny path around the lake lets you get active while you enjoy watching all the lake activities.

If you’d like to get out onto the lake, you can rent paddle boats for $2 or 3$, depending on which boat you choose. Regular boats are $2, and character boats, which include swans, ducks, pelicans, and even a dragon, rent for 3$. If you want to enjoy the view of the bridge, I recommend renting one of the boats. If boating isn’t for you, but you still want to enjoy the lake, you can feed the geese. For a small fee, you can also fish at the lake. Just make sure you register first!

One of Dan Nicholas’ most interesting attractions is Rowan Wildlife Adventures. You can enjoy seeing all kinds of animals, including a black bear and a red wolf. You can also see the turtle bog, which houses nine different species of turtles. Admission to Wildlife Adventures is only $1.

If you’d like to find a souvenir to take home with you, try out the gem mine. You bay anywhere from $7 to $42 for a bucket of dirt, with stones mixed in. They provide a screen, and you wash through the contents of the bucket to find semiprecious stones like amethysts and garnets. Once you’ve finished finding your treasures, you can have them cut into custom jewelry, or simple keep them the way they are.

Dan Nicholas offers all of these fun attractions, plus a lot more! Other park features include an aquarium, a train ride, picnicking, shelter reservations for events, and camping. For more information, visit http://www.dannicholas.net.
