The Catawba Indians volleyball team fell in the annual “Dig for the Cure” match against Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday night. Lenoir-Rhyne won 25-16, 17-25, 25-20, and 25-20. In the first set, Catawba came out energetic and scored the first point of the set and went on to take a 13-4 lead. After a timeout was called by Lenoir-Rhyne, L-R came out and went on a 10-1 scoring run and then later took the lead from the Indians. Rachel Gallup had a big contribution to the Indians fast start as she had three kills in the 1st set.

In the second set, the Indians had another energetic start as they started by scoring the first 5 out of 7 points. That energy the Indians brought in the second set led them to a 25-17 win. Erin Morant continued her good play that she has had this season in the second set as she had some key blocks and kills. Bri Howard also continued her strong play that she has had this season as she had a couple kills and a block.

In the third set, Catawba started out strong again taking an 8-4 lead. The lead would not hold up as Lenoir-Rhyne came back as they went on a 5 point run that made the score 11-9. Catawba tried to fight back with a scoring run that was led by a key block by Savannah Tomlinson. It would not be enough though because Lenoir-Rhyne went on to win the set 25-20.

In the fourth and final set of the match, the Indians came out with the same energy and intensity that carried them through the whole match and they jumped out to a 8-6 lead. The fourth set was a good back and forth set as both teams started matching each other point for point before Lenoir-Rhyne went on 7-1 scoring run. Catawba had a valiant comeback as they were down 22-14 before closing the gap to 24-20. The Indians could not recover after a strong surge and they ended up losing the forth set 25-20.

The Indians next play again in another conference match-up when they travel to play at Wingate next Friday night at 7.
