The Catawba Indians baseball team beat Belmont Abbey last Tuesday night, 17-9. Belmont Abbey would score the first run of the game in the top of the 1st, but the Indians would get off to a good start in the bottom of the 1st inning when they would go on a hitting frenzy that would be the theme of the night for the Indians. They scored 5 runs in the 1st inning. Catawba and Belmont Abbey would both score again in the 3rd inning. Catawba would score 5 more runs in the 3rd to make the score 10-4, Catawba.
In the 4th inning, the Indians would continue to hit the ball as they would bat around their whole line up and score 5 more runs to make it 15-4, Catawba. A collection of hits by Catawba that started when Julio Zubillaga got a walk and then later come back up in the inning and got hit by a pitch. Catawba would score most of these runs with 2 outs in the inning.
Catawba would get some strong pitching from a collection of pitchers including John Tuttle, Matt Farmakis, Joe Watson, and Ryan McClintock. The Indians success would continue as they would go on to win the conference tournament this past weekend.
The wins this weekend give the Indians wins in 15 of their last 17 games. The victory against Belmont Abbey along with the tournament victories this weekend in the conference tournament give the Indians an overall record of 32-17 and a conference record of 19-7. The Indians will play a pair of weekend games at USC Aiken starting on Friday at 7:30. Then the Indians will go on to play in the NCAA Division II Southeast region tournament after earning the automatic bid from the South Atlantic Conference with their conference tournament championship. The site for the NCAA Division II Southeast region is still to be determined.
