Lasting Remarks from a Catawba Senior: 24 Things about Katie Alexander

So, before our seniors leave us and move on to bigger and better things… we’ve decided to do a spotlight on them to get their lasting remarks…

5 Random Facts:

  1. I’m a crazy old cat lady.
  2. I have seen every single episode of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’, and am in the process of forcing all of my nieces and nephews to learn the theme song.
  3. I am DYING to see an ocelot. Although I only want to -see- one. I would not be silly enough to try and touch a wild one. I do not want my face ripped off.
  4. I have a tendency of adopting stray animals. Well, to be honest, if it is willing to follow me home, I’m probably going to keep it.
  5. I adore cooking, however, with the exception of baking, I will only cook foods that I like. However, nobody has complained thus far, so I plan on continuing this way.

4 Favorite Catawba Memories:

  1. Freshman Retreat ’06! It was a blast! It was the smartest thing I could have done going into freshman year. I made friends there who have stuck with me ever since.
  2. Every single strike (or ‘show take down’ for those of you not hip to the theatre lingo). Yes, they generally take forever, but I know I’m going to miss it.
  3. Winterfest- All of them. I love any good excuse to dress up.
  4. (I know this is such a classic answer, but…) Just hanging out with my friends. Whether we were having a soap fight, watching Ferngully and Boondock Saints, going out to Charlotte, having ‘date nights’,making fun of the people in Chili’s, or just sitting and complaining about how much homework we have and how we have so many papers to write while we procrastinate by watching Golden Girls or Nick at Nite, I will never forget all the great times we had.(Unless I become senile with age. In which case it won’t be my fault.)

5 Pieces of Advice You Would Give to Upcoming Students:

  1. Go to class when you can. You never know when you are going to come down with an illness and actually need those three free days.
  2. You’re allowed to change majors. It’s ok. Nobody is going to hate you for it. I was always happy with my major, but I know so many people who have said, after they graduated, that they really wished that they had gone with their passion.
  3. If you want a minor- go for it. Even if you can’t finish it, at least you got to take classes you enjoyed.
  4. Never take a class just because it fulfills a requirement. Take the time and find the courses that actually interest you…even if they are at 8 a.m.
  5. You are going to change. Go with it. That’s what college is about. Then, when you’re a senior, think back to your freshman year and write down every single way you’ve changed. If the changes are positive ones, keep on with them. If they’re negative changes, try to figure out what lead you to that change and see if you can’t figure out a way to alter yourself for the better.

5 Teachers/Classes you would recommend to take:

  1. Psychology of Exceptionalities with Dr. Boulter- Everyone ought to take this class in order to remove the preconceived notions and stereotypes so many of us have people with special needs.
  2. Human Biology with Dr. Drum- Where else are you going to learn about the hundreds of ways you could die? It’s fascinating, if in a morbid sort of fashion.
  3. Ethics with Dr. Holtzman- How to figure out what can be right and what can be wrong, and when.
  4. Asian Cinema with Dr. Woody Hood- You get to watch awesome movies and learn about Asian culture. How awesome is that?
  5. Fundamentals of Speech with Wittum- Or, ‘How to Speak in Front of a Group 101′. A very practical class for everyone, no matter what your major may be.

5 Things you will take with you once you Graduate

  1. The ability to hem my own pants. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m short. I also don’t want to spend money, for the rest of my life, having to pay people to hem my clothes. Thank you Costume Construction.
  2. Tons of clothes that say Catawba on them, a bunch of theatre programs, several Catawba pens, and a few pieces of tie line that followed me home from the scene shop.
  3. An extensive contacts list, and the knowledge that I can still contact my professors if I need some advice.
  4. A much more comfortable sense of ‘self’ than I had when I started out here.
  5. An awesome diploma, and my B.A. in Theatre Arts. (You know, God willing)
