An alumnus from Catawba College who truly had an impact on my life was Whitney Martin. There was never a dull moment when Whitney was around. She was someone who always kept me laughing and someone I knew I could confide in. Some of my fondest memories with her include sitting at her house playing Skipbo, going bowling, and helping her make her very first snowman. Although I only had the pleasure of spending time with her for one year, she quickly became one of my closest friends at Catawba College.
Whitney was a sociology major while attending Catawba. She also helped bring spirit and pep to the students during her senior year as co-caption of the cheerleading squad. At any football or basketball game, you could find Martin up in the air bringing smiles to people’s faces from the top of the pyramid.
Martin graduated from Catawba in 2009 and is now attending Horry Georgetown Technical College in Myrtle Beach, SC where she is a paralegal major. A paralegal is a lawyer’s assistant. Martin is making Catawba proud with her straight A’s in the major. She has been invited to become a member of the honor’s society at Horry Georgetown Tech because of such great grades. She is currently living at home with her parents in Conway. SC.
Since graduating, Martin has worked with the legal department of the City of North Myrtle Beach. Excitingly, Martin recently received a new job. She has a two week trial period beginning this month for a part-time job with a law firm in North Myrtle Beach, SC. She will finish school in July and is hoping to move back to the Charlotte area. Her goal is to become a paralegal with a small law firm.
Although Martin is on the fast track to success, she did have a few kind words to share about her experience at Catawba College. When I asked her what she missed the most about Catawba, she replied, “I miss the community feel of Catawba and all the activities that we could become involved in.” Martin left a good impression on the people of Catawba College. I am sure that in the future she will continue to make others smile and reach her goals of being a paralegal.
Whether she was flying through the air in her cheerleading uniform or learning how to make a snowman, Whitney Martin was keeping a smile on my face and happiness in my heart. She is missed at Catawba College.

This was a really great article to read. I know several seniors at Catawba College that have impacted my life and been great friends to me during my Freshman year. Though I am sad that they will be moving on, I can agree with Erin Kidd in that I wish them well and know that I will hear many exciting things from them in the future. I love the diversity at Catawba that enables you to meet and befriend people that represent all kinds of hobbies and different interests. I am thrilled to find out what my senior friends will be doing this time next year whether in graduate school or in fun jobs they love. Good luck to all of you seniors and God bless. Thanks for setting a fabulous example!
