Aly Halter, Pioneer Editor, Named Homecoming Queen 2009
Aly Halter was named our homecoming queen for 2009. She is a Communication major in the Ketner School of Business and Communication. Aly is also the editor of the new online Pioneer. She, along with other students you can check out under our staff list, worked hard to get the college newspaper online when the project was approved at the beginning of the semester.
Aly’s parents were able to make it to the game and see Aly crowned as the queen this year at Catawba College. Such a moment is always very special to parents, and it’s great when families from out-of-town can make the trip in for homecoming and support all our students.
“Aly has been fabulous both in the classroom and within the community,” says Cyndi Allison Wittum, Commuication lecturer and Pioneer advisor. “I’ve worked with Aly for three years now, and you could not ask for a harder working student or an all-round great kid. She is a pleasure to work with, and I’m really glad that Aly decided to come to Catawba. I’m also glad she was willing to take on the job as Pioneer editor. That is a big job as we shift online.”
Zane Gibson, another Communication major, was voted by his peers as homecoming king. Since he is the center for the football team, his parents accepted his crown. Again, it is wonderful to see the support of parents, fellow students, and alumni on campus.
Zane is known for his red hair and his sunny disposition. If anything rattles him, it never shows. He has an easy smile for friends, faculty, and staff on campus.
“I’ve been blessed to work with Zane too,” says Wittum. “I’ll never forget his speeches in my Fundamentals class and the way he supported all the other students in class. He’s the boy next door – or the one you hope moves in. Zane always makes me smile. He’s just that kind of guy.”
Congratulations to both Aly and Zane. They were selected by student vote to be honored at homecoming, and it is easy to see why they earned the queen and king crowns. Both students go way beyond in so many ways and always make the time for what is important – friends, family, and being the best they can day after day.
