Homecoming week at Catawba always hosts a number of events that are hard to miss. With one major event each night spanning from Monday night until homecoming on Saturday afternoon, there is plenty going on to keep students entertained. Thursday night marked one of the most popular events that Catawba produces: Deal Or No Deal.
The Canon student center is always packed when Deal Or No Deal is played, and when Catawba’s business fraternity Phi Beta Lambda hosted the event on Thursday, there was no exception. Everyone was out listening to Dr. Turner call out seven lucky numbers on their ticket, which gave them a shot at winning $500. President Turner was the guest host for the event, and close by were his wife Anita, and advisor to PBL and Dean of the Ketner School of Business, Pamela Thompson.

The student center was packed with anxious students waiting to win some money.
The true Deal Or No Deal is a game show on CNBC in which a contestant selects a case out of 26 cases in total with varying sums of money. The contestant picks out cases and tries to narrow them down to the highest value. After each selection of cases, a banker determines the value in which the contestant can walk away with, known as a “deal.” “No deal,” on the other hand, is when a contestant chooses to move forward and continues selecting cases leading to a possible higher amount.
Chris Beal, President of PBL at Catawba, coordinated the event between the members of PBL and the Student Government Association. Anastasia Barkova also played a lead real in preparing for Deal or no Deal. The majority of the case ladies came from Catawba‘s very own Volleyball Team, along with Leala Ghorbani from the Soccer Team, and Preston Hinkle and Stephne Atwood from PBL. Their black shirts and dark jeans resoundingly set the stage for each contestant and the audience alike.
As each player came up and stood beside President Turner, they were prompted to select cases. The contestant and the audience were then shown the amount of money that the banker offered to make a deal. Many of our students went through a number of the 26 cases, realizing that the opportunity cost of making a deal early was greater than pursuing a larger amount of money. With deal amounts ranging from around $50 to $186, the stakes were high the entire night. Members of the audience would scream and try to persuade their fellow students to pick specific cases, or makes certain deals with the banker.

President Turner congratulates Nikki Adams on her big win.
The final round ended with Nikki Adams going down to the wire and having to decide between taking the $186 offer from the banker or selecting one of the two cases available. Turning down the $186, she reluctantly decided on choosing case number 8, and gave the crowd something to cheer for when the Deal Or No Deal girl opened the case to show $500. A great ending to an already great night was the result of a risky decision and the hard work of the PBL members involved in coordinating Deal Or No Deal.
