The Lilly Center for Vocation and Values provides a number of opportunities for students to have a paid internship during the summer. These are internships that are unpaid, that the Lilly Center provides stipends for students.
Three students attended the Lilly Center luncheon, all which had internships funded by the Lilly Center over the summer of 2009. These students were Jessica Gilmore, Chris Beal, and Mayra Arroyo.
Also in attendance were Dr. Kenneth Clapp who serves as the Director of the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values, Mrs. Lucretia Hughes who is the Executive Assistant, and Mrs. Marcia Miller who is the Director of Career and Academic Support Services.
As the luncheon was for students who had Lilly Endowment funded internships, as well as to give appreciation to staff members, much of the discussion surrounded the experiences of the students.
Jessica Gilmore’s internship was at Catawba College’s Center for the Environment where she worked on the Air Quality Initiative, and graphic design work that included Webpage Design. Chris Beal worked at the Rowan Business Alliance. Much of his work involved speaking with clients and booking the facility for events. Mayra Arroyo worked for the City of Salisbury in Human Resources with the Hispanic Coalition. She was involved in organizing “La Fiesta de Rowan” while raising funds and planning for the event.
Students find the internships to be very meaningful in building connections and understanding what a real work environment is like. Many of the theories that were learned at Catawba could be applied to the work experiences that the students received during their internships.
Without the Lilly Center Endowment fund, many of the students who receive summer internships would not be able to stay within the area and work within their respective fields. The luncheon was a great opportunity for the students and staff to enjoy L.A. Murph’s cuisine, while discussing their shared experiences.
