On Thursday, January 20, students packed the Cannon Student Center in an effort to represent their side of campus, and to do one of the greatest deeds ever: save a life.
After a fierce battle between the east side of campus (Hollifield, Stanback, Barger-Zartman, and Woodson) versus the west side of campus (Salisbury- Rowan, Hurley, Heath Hill, Pine Knot, and Abernathy Village), 105 people registered to donate blood. Of those 105 people, 76 were able to donate successfully. When the day was done, the east side of campus won the contest, and all the donors from that side of campus were rewarded with a $10 iTunes gift card.
The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas was the sponsor of the event, along with the assistance of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. After the competitive campaign between the residence life staff, all of whom had at least one resident donate, 228 lives were saved using the blood drawn at Catawba.
The next blood drive will be in the fall of 2011, presumed to be another challenging competition among the Catawba campus.
