If there is one thing that is on every student’s mind this week, it’s Winterfest. This annual event is sponsored by the Helen Foil Beard Society. This year, the theme is Vintage Hollywood and as always, it will be held in the Peeler Crystal Lounge.
Unlike the past few years though, entrance to Winterfest is not guaranteed to everyone. Starting Wednesday, members of Helen Foil Beard were giving tickets to students during lunch and dinner time in the student center. Students were required to show their ID to receive a ticket and in order to bring a guest, it is required that students acquire a ticket for their guest as well. Basically, if a student and/or guest does not have a ticket he/she is denied entry. Another rule change this year is the new rule that once someone leaves Winterfest, they may not return.
On a positive note, those students who were lucky enough to get one of the 350 tickets given out are excited and ready for this Saturday to be here. Senior Ashley Acken shares that she buys a new dress every year for Winterfest and that she “always gets ready with friends…that way we can help each other with hair and makeup as we need it, plus it’s always fun to get ready with your girlfriends.” Another senior, Courtney Cowman also shares that she gets a new dress every year and she also explains that her and her friends like to “…get together and make a really nice meal. It’s always a lot of fun.” Junior Timberely Motsinger also admits to purchasing a new dress each year, but she shares that she “never spends more than $20 on her dress.” Unlike the majority of females that were questioned, Junior, Kelsey Perusse, does not get a new dress every year. Perusse says, “I just ask people if they have an extra.”
Obviously, female students prepare for Wintefest much differently than male students, but it is always important to hear from both sides. Senior Garrett McAuliffe shares that “As a male senior who has been to Winterfest three times, it is not all that important to me, but I definitely make sure I have nice clothes for the dance. I like to hang out with my friends before and sometimes we all go out to eat. It usually all depends on what the girls want to do.”
Helen Foil Beard members, Arsherres and Taryn Jenkins are both Winterfest veterans, but they have to prepare differently than other students because they have to assist in setting up and decorating before the event starts. According the Arsherres, Helen Foil Beard members work in 2 hour shifts, starting at 3pm to set up Peeler Crystal Lounge for Wintefest. When Arsherres and Taryn are not decorating the lounge, they are in their apartment, listening to music and helping each other and their roommates and friends get dressed and ready. The sisters share that they “…always walk to Winterfest together” with their group of friends and once the event ends, they “…all go to Ihop together to celebrate a successful Winterfest.”
Although this year’s Winterfest is starting off much differently than those in the past, it is guaranteed to be a good time.
