On Monday, November 3rd, 2014, the student body received an email reminder to complete a course entitled “Consent and Respect.”  This course is Catawba’s effort to be in compliance with a law that will be coming into effect called The SaVE Act.  SaVE stands for Sexual Violence Elimination.  The SaVE Act is going to require colleges and  universities to have prevention and awareness programs for the students and new employees.

The course gives out tips and helpful information for victims of sexual assault.  Some of the information and tips are as follows. If you or somebody you know is sexually assaulted know that it is not your fault it is the attackers.  Know that most college men choose not to commit sexual assault.  It is okay to say “No” at any point and your partner has to respect that, even if you previously consented. Most often in reported cases of rape the victim is female but males can be victims too. It is helpful to know that you can have a forensic exam done, free of charge, up to five (5) days after an assault takes place.  It is best to have an exam done as soon as possible because evidence against the attacker is lost the more time that passes.  It is important to note that you do not have to press charges even if you have a forensic exam.

Students must have this course completed before December 1st, 2014.  The college will not place a fine on your student account for this course.
