Coming into last season, the Catawba football team was going through a tranisition with a new coaching staff and many inexperienced players.  A year later, they are a wiser and a year better, as they showed in their 35-7 stomping of Davidson on Saturday night.

The Indians had a rocky start to their game on Saturday night but quickly turned things around and had a firm grasp of the game from then on.  Three minutes into the game, sophomore linebacker Jamal Lackey intercepted the ball from Davidson quarterback J.P. Douglas and returned it back 67 yards for the touchdown.  Do not think Catawba stopped there.  With 4:42 on the clock in the 1st quarter, freshman wide receiver Keyon West dove into the end zone for a Mike Sheehan pass for another touchdown.  This put the score at 14-0 Catawba at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, sophomore wide receiver Carlos Tarrats quickly resumes the scoring barrage when Sheehan hits in stride for his second touchdown pass of the night.  Jason Taylor and Derrick Lee quickly show Davidson just what they are made of when they stop Davidson’s Douglas, which forces Davidson to punt the ball.

T. Williams quickly gets things back for Catawba when he intercepts the ball from Davidson and runs it up to the Catawba 31-yard line. Sheehan hooked up with senior tight end Tyler Hamilton for another Catawba touchdown and Sheehan’s third of the night. The score was 28-0 Catawba at half time.

It was a rough start to the second half for both teams. Penalties were coming from both sides, as the refs just can’t seem to keep those flags in their pockets.  Junior running back Cary Littlejohn gets things started for Catawba when he runs the ball for a gain of 45 yards, and sophomore running back David Burgess finishes the drive with an 8-yard touchdown.  Davidson tries but just can’t seem to get past Catawba’s defense. Davidson manages to get a first down.  Taylor, senior safety Philip George, sophomore linebacker R.J. Beaty, and others manage to limit the Davidson offense to a field goal attempt.  The attempt is from 25 yards out but the kick is no good, as it hits the left upright.  Reserves played the majority of the fourth quarter to get them some valuable experience.

Catawba (1-0) travels into the Appalachian mountains and to Cullowhee, NC next week to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts (1-1).  Kickoff is set for 3:30.
