On Saturday, September 27 Catawba College held its annual Cheerwine Day Open House. One of the activities included a station where visitors and residents could partake in ice cream floats with Cheerwine soda catered by the Chartwells dinning company and an experiment in the chemistry department of the Shuford science building.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) hosted the event and taught prospective students how to silver Cheerwine bottles by mixing chemicals within an empty bottle in order to make it look metallic. The members of ACS worked alongside the students to ensure the procedure was done properly and ran smoothly. This even introduced  those who might not know what they would like to study in college to chemistry and gave some a new perspective on chemistry, showing how fun it can really be.

That afternoon, ACS helped with concessions in order to raise funds for chemistry students to attend conferences and present the research they have been working on. This aligns with the goal of the American Chemical Society, which is to ensure that chemistry students are able to make the most out of their college careers while gaining experience in the field and increasing preparedness to work and be successful in the scientific community.
