Last Wednesday, April 9th, the Freshman Class hosted a Shag Dance event on the outdoor sand volleyball courts. The event was open for beginners, pros, or anyone who has never even heard of Shag dancing. Even if you did not want to dance, you could socialize, play frisbee and listen to the relaxing beach music . There were also hot wings, cookies, and soda for anyone who simply wanted to stop by and watch. Beginning Shag dancing lessons were taught throughout the night by the freshman class president Justin Burroughs and his twin brother Zach. There were breaks in between lessons to individually help people who were struggling. Justin’s competitive Shag dance partner Kayla Henley, a senior from Western Alamance high school, even showed up to help with the girls’ dance moves. Justin Burroughs recently won a $5,000 college scholarship through competitive shag dancing.

By the end of the night, almost everyone in attendance had mastered the basic shag dancing steps and spins. Learning the steps was fun and simple and the atmosphere was relaxing so instead of getting mad when you messed up everyone just laughed it off and tried again. If you are interested in creating a Shag Dancing club here on Catawba’s campus or in having more Shag Dancing events then feel free to contact Justin Burroughs at [email protected] or call/text him at 704-640-1885.
